Holiday Drama – Prepare, Prevent & Recover
Family holidays are rapidly approaching. Everyone who loves a BPD sufferer knows the holidays are amongst the most stressful, predictable events of the year.
Our presentation will cover:
- The ramp-up period – The holidays are approaching; retailers and the media create the pressure of unrealistic expectations. BPD sufferers feel levels of stress far greater than the general population during this period. This stress is like a slow fuse for the sufferer. We will discuss techniques which can be employed to help defuse the holiday ramp-up period.
- The dinner table battlefield – As with the ramp-up period, there are preparations which can be made to minimize the stress and impact of the holiday gathering. The sufferers can experience an overload condition by interacting with rarely seen friends and family. Normally acceptable conversation can be fraught with figurative land mines, e.g. “What are you doing these days?”, “Do you have a boyfriend?”, “So, when are you going to get married?”, “Are you still struggling with drugs?”, etc. You cannot prevent or control all triggering interactions, but there are techniques you can employ to minimize the collateral damage. Additionally, there is first-aid which can be applied to emotional wounds sustained by your loved ones to help mitigate the damage.
- The in-between – You made it through the first holiday, it was tough, you didn’t prepare for everything, there were some skirmishes but your efforts made a difference. The period between holidays is an opportunity for you to glean some lessons from the earlier holiday. We will teach you how to analyze events and learn from your successes and failures so you can more effectively apply your skills to the next holiday at the end of the year.
