According to Shirley S. Wang of The Wall Street Journal there has been significant controversy in the committee-like compilation of the upcoming, new edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM for short.
Among the contentious issues is the defining of a new children’s disease, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD). Psychology professionals have proposed DMDD as way to characterize children who are constantly irritable and or explosive.
Ms. Wang’s article provides a tantalizing insight into the process of defining new mental illnesses and how this process helps to advance and mature both the professional treatment and public perception of those suffering with psychological disorders.
